Sign Lights, Modern Chandelier Highlight New Farmhouse Interior
We kicked off the month of March with a look at Stephanie and Jason’s brand new farmhouse in Fredericksburg, Virginia. While Stephanie wanted to find an older home to renovate, their search came up empty, so they purchased 10 acres and jumped into the design process. Today, we’re taking a walk through the interior of the couple’s new home.
“Our design direction was fairly simple and straightforward,” Stephanie says, “although our architect may feel differently about that.” The modest, 2,000-square-foot home features exceptional finishes and craftsmanship and plenty of reclaimed wood components such as flooring, beams, mantle, and shelving.
A farmhouse also wouldn’t be complete without shiplap. The stairwell from the living space going to the second floor features beautiful shiplap highlighted by Elliptical Sign Lights.
“We chose these sign lights because I loved the idea of the light illuminating the shiplap wall,” Stephanie explains. “It was also important to have the bulb shielded from view because the stairwell is open to the living space. I also thought it was a fun and different play on stairwell sconces that I hadn’t seen before.”
The 9″ shades of these handcrafted sign lights offers the right scale allowing the perfect amount of light to drip down the wall onto the steps. The G3 arm allows the fixture to extend far enough to function well but does not disrupt the flow of the steps.
For the dining room, Stephanie considered a number of elements before choosing the Downtown Minimalist 5-Light Chandelier for the table.
“Our home is small-ish with a lot of design elements happening, and the first floor is a very open concept,” she notes. “It was important to find a fixture that had impact, felt airy, but wasn’t visually intrusive. This 5-light chandelier ticked all the boxes.”
Stephanie customized the Downtown Minimalist Chandelier with a Textured Black finish, 36″ stem, and 1910-era 40-watt Edison style light bulbs.
“I wanted to try a bold statement color but couldn’t convince my husband to take that plunge,” she says. “I chose the Textured Black finish to match the Barn Light fixtures we already have and love. The 36″ stem helped us get the fixture to the perfect height over our dining table.”
Just off the kitchen, the family mudroom sees a lot of use. With the variety of customizing options offered by Barn Light Electric, Stephanie knew she could create a single pendant that would suit the space perfectly.
She chose the American-made Farm & Barn Warehouse Pendant and customized it with a 16″ shade and Black powder coat finish.
“I adore the light we picked for the mudroom. It’s a well-used space so I wanted something that would not only look great but also stand up to the potential of a stray coat sleeve hitting it,” she explains. “The 16″ shade is perfect for illuminating the space, and we hung it low enough so that you can see the silhouette of the shade through our front porch window.”
The couple have been settled in their home for almost a year now and are pleased overall with their design efforts and choices for materials and fixtures.
“I think it’s normal to have some second guessing especially when picking finishes without a designer. But one of the few things that we both are 100 percent content with is our selections from Barn Light Electric,” Stephanie says. “We receive overwhelming praise from visitors on our lighting. I love that we were able to customize each fixture to our specific needs and maintain a cohesive look throughout.”
