Porcelain Enamel Wall Sconces Lend Nostalgic Feel
Surrounded by palm trees and the warm breezes of the nearby Intracoastal Waterway, Doug of Lighthouse Point, Florida, has no trouble feeling like he lives in the Sunshine State. His home, however, lacked the old Florida feel he wanted, so he started remodeling to bring some Key West character and charm to the late 1960s-era home.
“I tried to make the house look like an old Florida home with lap board siding and tongue-and-groove accents,” Doug says. When he started looking for exterior lighting, he wanted something that would last.
“I had some fixtures that didn’t last a year, so I wanted something more durable,” he explains. That search led Doug to our Porcelain Enamel Lighting collection.
After browsing our Photo Gallery for ideas, Doug chose four of our Seaside Wall Sconces and customized them with a 12″ shade and White finish color. He added a cast guard to the fixture in a complementary Jadite finish color. He topped off the look with Honey Crackle glass.
“I wanted that Jadite color in there and while the guard doesn’t match the color of the shutters exactly,” he says, “just having that bit of color to complement the shutters plus the yellow glass really sets it off.” The Seaside Radial Wave Shade has roots in the gas station lighting of the early 20th century when wavy shades were mounted atop sturdy poles to light up roadside stations.
Available in three shade sizes, this funky, American-made shade is hand spun from commercial grade steel by our metal workers then coated with multiple layers of porcelain enamel glass. The shade is then baked in our special porcelain oven where temps of up to 1,600 degrees seal the glass to the steel creating a hard-as-nails, yet high-gloss finish. This finish will never fade even in Florida’s brilliant sunshine and requires minimal maintenance to keep its shiny finish.
“I was going for that Tommy Bahama/Ernest Hemingway look,” Doug notes. “They look really good on the front of the house and fit right in. They’re perfect.”
The Seaside shade is also available as a gooseneck, stem mount, studio light, or cord hung pendant. Check out all the options on our Shop by Shade page! And all of these mountings are available in our energy-saving Porcelain Enamel LED Collection!
