Barn Lights Lend Urban Chic Vibe to Basement Renovation
Kids usually have that one friend they love to visit. There’s something about other people’s spaces that is attractive, intriguing, and way more fun than home. Maybe it’s a cool playroom. Or a pool in the back yard. Or simply different Xbox games on the shelf.
For Michelle in Wichita, Kansas, she wanted to have “that” home, so she set about renovating her finished basement to be more inviting. Here’s a before pic of Michelle’s space.
“We wanted to create a place where our friends and our children’s friends could hang out in the safety and supervision of our home,” Michelle says. She started on Houzz where she was totally inspired by a photo of a shuffleboard table with some gooseneck barn lights above it. Here’s the amazing transformation!
Michelle was going for an urban bar look and nailed it completely with the wood floors, brick, and industrial touches throughout the space.
“We knew we wanted a shuffleboard table and the barn lighting was perfect!” Michelle says. After much consideration, she chose The Original™ Warehouse Gooseneck Light to highlight her new shuffleboard table. She customized these three barn lights with 12″ shades, a Black finish, and G12 gooseneck arms in Brushed Aluminum.
“The color and finish were classic yet urban,” she explains. The Original™ is one of our best-selling RLM-inspired warehouse shades. With a timeless style, it works beautifully in so many different spaces, and the dozens of customizing options allow it to go from a traditional farmhouse look to retro to urban chic.
The Original™ is hand spun from commercial grade aluminum in our Florida manufacturing facility and is finished and assembled on site. This versatile shade can be mounted not only as a gooseneck light, but as a stem mount, cord hung, or flush mount pendant, wall sconce, or even a post mount light.
“No one around us has anything like them,” Michelle says. “They are the perfect, original touch to the space and are of great quality too.”

Can you tell me what kind of finish is on the wall with the barn lights? Thanks!
It is grasscloth. I ordered it from Sherwin Williams. There are tons of different weaves and prices but this was one of the most economically priced. The back color is black with a tan grass weave. It only comes un-pasted. I’ve never hung grasscloth before but with some research and my mom assisting it wasn’t all that bad.
Thanks Michelle for the info! Love the look!
The place looks great. Can you tell me what size shuffleboard table did you use?
It is a 14 foot table.
This is a great look, what watts are the lights and how high up are they? Looks like the perfect amount of light
Thank you! Our ceilings are right at 104″ and the lights are installed 23″ down, on center. I use 60 watt bulbs. It is the perfect amount of light for the space.
Well done! What material and color are the floors?
