Cozy Cabin Benefits From Rustic Touches, Industrial Lighting
If you missed last Wednesday’s post, we began a tour of a gorgeous home and adjacent cabin in the Great Northwest region of Idaho. The mastermind behind the interior design was the talented Dion Williams. Her goal for the extensive remodel of the main home was to embrace the traditional cabin elements while reinterpreting them into a contemporary style.
“The interior of the main cabin was gutted with the exception of the original shiplap walls and the open loft space,” Dion says. “An addition was built creating space for the bedroom suites, but the modest footprint was intentionally created with small spaces in mind.”
Dion started with a light, neutral backdrop and overall color palette then added rustic wood elements in restrained and artistic applications to create the cabin vibe. Fixtures were selected to carefully combine refined industrial materials and styles with a contemporary application. Dion filled each room with pieces often found in a traditional cabin such as wool blankets, cozy pillows, deer antlers, and industrial lighting.
The kitchen island is highlighted by two Chicago Vintage Industrial Stem Mount Pendants. These handcrafted lights are customized with 18″ shades and a porcelain enamel White finish. A contrasting Galvanized cast guard adds a certain heft to the fixtures while ribbed glass diffuses the light slightly.
“I wanted the lights to be slightly oversized to create drama and substance within the space,” Dion explains. “The entire home has moments of galvanized metal, and the finish on these lights is perfect. The ribbed glass provides an interesting element that is non competitive with surrounding design elements.”
The upstairs loft serves as a lounge area for relaxing, movies, and games. It’s also a popular hangout spot for the kids. Dion chose the Industrial Guard Sconce to install over each window to provide accent lighting. These American-made sconces sport a Galvanized finish, heavy-duty cast guard, and ribbed glass.
“I chose these to complement the lights in the kitchen below,” she notes. “I think it’s important for a cohesive design to pull bits and pieces of certain design elements throughout the home. I love how they make each window a feature not forgotten. It feels like art to me.”
In one of the bedrooms, floor-to-ceiling windows offer a grand view of the surrounding mountains. An Apollo 5-Light Chandelier makes its own industrial statement in the room. This fixture features a Bronze finish, heavy-duty cast guards, and ribbed glass.
“I love how the bronze finish works with and supports my color scheme,” Dion says. “The ribbed glass adds another layer of texture and interest.”
In a nearby bathroom, another Industrial Guard Sconce serves as a vanity light. This fixture was customized with the same Bronze finish as the chandelier as well as the heavy-duty guard and ribbed glass.
“The Bronze color works perfectly with the finish on the bath faucets and shower fixtures,” Dion notes. “The entire color scheme was designed with the colors of a paint horse in mind. I did the horse painting, seen in the mirror, and wanted the colors to sing together.”
Both Dion and the homeowners were thrilled with the end results of both the home and the sleeping cabin.
“All of the colors and finishes are perfect because of the samples Barn Light offers beforehand and the many customizable finishes that are available. That is difficult to find in the lighting industry,” Dion says. “We are all very happy with the look, feel, and quality of the lights. The industrial moments I hoped for were largely achieved by the Barn Light fixtures.”
