Tucked into a quiet hillside in the small town of Fairview, North Carolina, lies a beautiful contemporary home full of warm, earth tones and a cozy mountain feel. Sandie, an editor and designer, lives here with her musician husband and Whitney, a sweet, grey-faced golden retriever. Sandie spends many hours in her home office creating the Fairview Town Crier, a local paper,and working for other local organizations including the Fairview Business Association. The lighting in her office was adequate but put off too much heat in the small, 12 x 12 room.
In yesterday’s blog post we visited a brand new, green-built home in northern New York designed by a couple who were unhappy with renting but didn’t have the finances to buy an expensive, energy-efficient home built to their standards. We took a tour of Jeff and Kalie’s new kitchen where five cord-hung porcelain enamel lights take center stage over the island and countertops. Today, we venture out onto the porch where two more RLM warehouse shades add a bright touch to the front of the home.

Jeff and Kalie were tired of renting and wanted to live in a green home that was not only energy efficient but beautiful too and equipped with as many American made products they could find. With some savings in the bank and Jeff being a jack-of-all-trades, the couple started researching sustainable designs then jumped right in and built their own green home in northern New York.

Let’s face it — women spend a lot of time in the kitchen. It is what it is, and it’s not necessarily a bad thing. Especially when your kitchen is light-filled and a comfortable place not only to prepare meals but to relax with the kids after school or enjoy an evening cuppa tea with that last brownie you tucked away. This inviting space is full of feminine details from the floral wallpaper and plate collection to the pink framed chalkboard and baby blue fridge. Complementing all of these light touches are the cord hung pendants in a soft mint color which really pops amidst all the pink and blue.
Farmhouses can be both a blessing and a curse. A blessing in that they’re filled with character and history and charm. A curse in that the years can take a toll even on well-built homes. When Diane and Jim of Washington, Vermont, took ownership of their old family homestead, built in 1850, they knew it would need some updating.
