When Wes first saw his future home in Merida, a 500-year-old city on Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula, no one would have blamed him if he had completely leveled the place and built something new. But Wes saw the character of what he lovingly calls “the ruin” and transformed it into a stylish, functional, and inviting space with a definitive nod to its history. Wes chronicled the 59-week process on a Facebook page where friends and family could watch as the workers raised beams, poured concrete, installed new colorful tiling, and added a pool and rooftop patio.

When we first visited Nickelfish back in a February 2012 post, this interactive design and marketing company in Mendham, New Jersey, had just finished renovating their office space with our Outback Gooseneck Lights and Outback Pendants. Located in the Thomas Wolfe House, the office is in the Mendham Historic Business District and looks very much as it did in the 1930s when barn lights were first being manufactured. Like many retirees, Wes Prince was looking for a change of scenery. But unlike those who simply retire to a sunny locale to relax, Wes took on a renovation project that would send most homeowners running for a condo. Wes sold his loft in Atlanta, and, along with his new bride Lola, packed the Jeep with a five-month-old Golden Retriever and a Chihuahua then drove 3,000 miles to Merida, a 500-year-old city on Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula. It was here in this historic city that Wes and Lola tackled the complete renovation of an old ruin that would become their dream home. On his first trip to the area, a friend took him to see the house.
