Barn Pendants, Goosenecks Add Color to Blogger’s Creative Space

It’s tempting when you buy a house to dash in, put your personal stamp on it, and fill every square inch. When Kerry and her husband Travis moved into their new home on the coast of Maine, they decided to spend some time thinking instead about what they wanted the unfinished space above their garage to be. Kerry is the author of a blog called Kid Giddy while Travis is a graphic designer. Their thoughtful process and creative spirits led them to envision a creative studio.

“During the renovation process, we focused on four things: open concept, exposed wood, raw metal, and a timeless appeal,” Kerry explains. “We wanted exposed beams, white walls, and wood flooring. Although colored walls can be fun, we chose to keep the color in the accessories.” Kerry chose a classic barn light for the new studio space in the Original™ Warehouse Pendant Light. These 16″ American-made pendants were customized with a porcelain enamel Jadite finish and a standard black cord. When choosing these pendants, the couple searched for inspiration.

“We live in a coastal area, but also have a tremendous amount of farm land around us too,” Kerry says. “We see barn lights everywhere from barns to seaside shacks selling lobsters. We wanted to bring that feeling inside. It just fit our personalities and felt right to us.” Kerry is a sewing pattern designer who spends many hours in the new studio. But Travis and the couple’s two daughters, who love to draw and craft as well, all spend time in the space together. Kerry was attracted to the vintage feel of the Jadite finish color.

“We didn’t want a bright color that would scream for attention,” she notes. “My mother has a lot of vintage enamelware that I love and one piece is a vintage green that is very similar to these pendants.”

By the entryway doors, Kerry knew she would have to have a wall-mounted light but she thought a sconce would be too small for the space. As she and Travis stood in the space looking up into the doorway of the studio, they spied their cord-hung porcelain pendant lights and knew they’d found a solution. The couple chose two classic Original™ Warehouse Gooseneck Lights in an Industrial Grey finish with a 12″ shade and a G11 gooseneck arm finished in brushed aluminum.

“It’s hard to make a financial commitment on good lighting, but we don’t regret it at all,” Kerry says. “Not once have we wished we’d gotten other lights. We still look at them and love them, and we love the reactions we get when people notice them and gasp with excitement.”
