Enhancing Ambiance: Customizable Lights Brighten Ski Hostel
As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, anticipation builds for the upcoming winter ski season. In Jackson Hole, Wyoming, with the majestic mountains poised for snowy adventures, finding a place to stay that is convenient to the slopes yet still affordable can be a challenge.
Luckily, The Hostel Jackson Hole is perched just a short walk to the gondola that whisks you to the top of the mountain. Company president Cody Mueller recently spearheaded a full remodel of the hostel’s guest rooms which include private baths. New lighting was a vital component of the project.
“The hostel is located at the base of the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort ski area and near Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks,” Cody says. “Our design inspiration was to incorporate a western outdoors feel consistent with the beautiful setting of the property.”
Cody and his interior decorator turned to Barn Light Electric for quality lighting that could be easily customized to fit the spaces and style they envisioned.
“Fundamental to our lighting selection was the flexibility of customization,” Cody explains. “Barn Light was a great choice for us because their website allowed us to select fixtures appropriate for our spaces with colors consistent with our design palette. And they have the reliability of being American made.”
Cody and his designer were attracted to Barn Light’s guard-and-glass style of lighting which offers plenty of illumination with rugged construction to handle a high-traffic, commercial setting. Rooms at The Hostel are outfitted with either one king bed or four twin beds with overhead lighting provided by Wallaby Flush Mount Pendants. These handcrafted lights are customized with 12″ shades in a Barn Red finish and frosted glass.
“We originally intended to these lights to be wall mounted, but decide to locate our new air conditioning units high on the wall in the same space,” Cody notes. “Fortunately, Barn Light offers a flush mount option allowing us to light the space by the entry door while freeing up room on the wall for the high-efficiency heat pump.”
Over the sink, the duo chose the matching Wallaby Gooseneck Light also customized with a 12″ shade in the Barn Red finish. A Galvanized guard adds contrast to the fixture which is mounted on a G3 gooseneck arm.
“The 12″ shade is the perfect size for the space, and the Barn Red finish adds an accent that keeps with our natural color palette,” Cody says. “The frosted glass gives a warm light in the rooms. It’s a great look.”
Open shelving in the compact rooms provides space for guests to store their gear. Cody found the perfect fixture to provide illumination without taking up valuable space. The Atomic Topless Double Industrial Guard Sconce is customized with the same Barn Red finish, frosted glass, and standard cast guards.
“This fixture fits perfectly in the space above our storage shelving and, because it runs horizontally, it is high on the wall leaving ample room for the storage space below,” he explains. “The cast guards are a great design element to finish the look and protect the glass. This is important since our guests bring skis into the rooms that could inadvertently come into contact with the lights.”
For nighttime reading, the king beds are flanked by Industrial Guard Sconces. These also boast the Barn Red finish and contrasting Galvanized guard.
“The flexibility of customizing made them a great choice for our bedside lighting where the size of the fixture is especially important,” he notes. Barn Light’s array of customizing options, from size and finish to mountings, makes it easy to create the perfect combination of American-made, handcrafted style.
“We mixed Galvanized and Barn Red finishes which results in a great combination of an industrial feel and our natural color palette,” Cody says. “We like the balance of a rustic outdoor look and the smooth lines that make the lights look great!”
