Nothing makes our eyes light up like seeing bold, beautiful warehouse shades highlighting the side of a barn. And while this barn is actually a garage, we love the vernacular of this structure located in a small, western Connecticut town tucked into the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains. From the traditional barn doors to the cupola on top, this building needed nothing more than a classic light like an RLM warehouse shade to complete the look.
Architects, it seems, are always coming up with new and creative ways to design homes that take into account not only the environment in which the home is built, but the homeowner’s budget as well. The Porch House project, designed by Lake | Flato Architects is one such example. Instead of starting from scratch, the architects took factory-built rooms, such as living and bedroom spaces, then added custom designed elements built on sight to connect the cost-saving, pre-built pieces. These connecting elements are often porches, breezeways, overhangs, and carports. What John needed was a big old barn. He had an extra vehicle to store, a lawn mower, and gardening equipment but nowhere to put it at his Connecticut home. He also wanted a workshop and a place to just hang out and maybe throw a party. But John didn’t have a big old barn. So he built a big new barn instead. And once the post-and-beam structure was finished, John knew exactly what it needed — barn lights, of course!
