America’s largest home, aka the Biltmore Mansion, may get all the publicity, but the quaint Biltmore Village just outside the gates to the Estate is equally charming and was one of America’s first planned communities. George Vanderbilt envisioned the Village as a planned, self-sustaining community whose formal appearance would not only complement his beautiful estate but provide rental income. Almost all of the original buildings survive from the 1890’s, and today, Biltmore Village is a distinctive shopping district with independent retailers and fine restaurants located on tree-lined streets with brick sidewalks and open air dining.

Choosing security lighting for a business can be daunting with endless choices in fixtures, types of bulbs, and energy saving features to consider. Some people think brighter is better and choose the biggest lights they can find to light up everything within three city blocks. Yet using extra bright lights is actually discouraged by security experts. The problem with these fixtures is that the glare they produce actually prevents you, or the passing patrol car, to see clearly when trying to spot potential intruders. The owners describe Kochhaus as a “walk-in cookbook” where customers choose dinner from illustrated recipes hanging throughout the store then select premeasured ingredients off the shelves. Voila! Homecooked meals with no missing spices and no hassle in the kitchen. Not surprisingly, Berliners took to the concept immediately prompting the opening of two more locations in Hamburg and Berlin.

One of their stores, Greenlife Grocery in Asheville, North Carolina, offers the very best in local produce, meats, cheeses, and wines on their shelves as well as in their adjoining café. It was in the café and on the outside patio that we spotted some galvanized barn lights much like our Barn Light Warehouse Pendant with the stem mount option.
