The Barn Lights of the Caribbean

When traveling outside of the continental US, rarely do you consider that you might run into examples of barn lights, especially when you’re talking about the Caribbean. This broad assumption, while on the surface might sound correct; many ports of call such as Nassau in the Bahamas experience a large volume of tourism. Local shops in these areas seem to be growing and making strides to further improve the aesthetics of their shops, hoping to bring more customers in with a friendly mix of local and worldly styling. This unique mix of trends can prove to be the ideal setting for the unique charm that is created through the use of our light fixtures. This theory was proven upon a recent trip I made to Nassau, where it was discovered that you don’t have to be on the mainland to find our barn lighting.

Industrial Porcelain Pendant Lights in Tampa Cigar Factories

For decades, the Tampa Bay area was known as the cigar capital of the United States. Vicente Martinez Ybor, a prominent Spanish-born cigar manufacturer moved his business from Cuba, to Key West and finally to a plot of land in Tampa Bay. Through the years, additional cigar-making companies sprouted up throughout the Tampa Bay area and many of their warehouses were lit with industrial porcelain pendant lights. As you can see in the photo above, these pendants were strategically placed to provide a directional beam of light over the tables occupied with workers rolling cigars. Toward the end of the 20th century and into the early 2000’s, increased taxes on tobacco products forced many of Tampa’s cigar factories to permanently close their doors.

Porcelain gas station lights were valued for more than just their visual appeal, they also created an inviting and safe environment for customers who may be filling up or working late!
