Gooseneck Lighting, Schoolhouse Pendants for Java Joint

One thing is for certain — New Englanders love their coffee! Two weeks ago, on the main blog, we explored a coffee shop in Arlington, Massachusetts, all lit up by beautiful warehouse shades. Today, we travel closer in towards Boston to historic Cambridge where we find the Dwelltime Coffee Bar has also gone all vintage with their commercial lighting scheme. This inviting venue certainly makes you want to belly up to the coffee bar, then relax with a good e-book, and enjoy the surroundings!

Deep Bowl Pendants Blend Style and Function for Commerical Lighting

Smack in the heart of California’s Napa Valley with its world-renowned wineries, glitzy spas, and gourmet restaurants, you might not notice Kelly’s Fuel and Provisions at first glance. Located in Yountville, in the heart of the valley, this one-pump gas station and adjacent store is “a hub for the local community and a place with unique merchandise for the practical traveler” according to owner Tim Kelly. Kelly renovated the space with plywood tables and shelves, metal fixtures, and a concrete floor to keep the industrial feel of the original gas station. Highlighting the mix of goods — think boutique wines alongside diet Coke, gourmet chocolate and M&Ms — are striking deep bowl pendants. These are very similar to our Ivanhoe® Wilcox Deep Bowl Porcelain Pendant, part of our expanding line of American-made Porcelain Barn Lights.

Warehouse Shades Lend Strong 1930s Taste to Coffee Shop

barn_light_warehouse_pendant_cord_hung_restaurant.jpgWith coffee shops, it’s all about the atmosphere. Because, quite frankly, lots of operations out there can roast and make a good cup of coffee, so like other businesses, a coffee shop needs something to set it apart from the competition. Comfortable seating, free wifi, and an interesting selection of coffee blends and food, can all lure customers through the door and, more importantly, make them want to come back again and again.

Warehouse Shades, Industrial Pendants Highlight New Boston Restaurant

In a city as old as Boston, there is precious little “new” space. So when the owners of West Bridge, a new restaurant in the historic area of Cambridge, were searching for a suitable space, they moved into the shuttered Boston Woven Hose Factory — think fire hoses — near the Longfellow Bridge which spans the Charles River from Boston into Cambridge. Many of the original features of the factory remain in an industrial salute to the building’s past including the 18-foot ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows.

Warehouse Shades in Boston Cafe Add Nostalgic Touch to Decor

Just northwest of Boston, in the town of Somerville, lies a place that is reminiscent of a more well-known pub in Boston that brought us years of laughs and classic lines like “It’s a dog-eat-dog world and I’m wearing Milk Bone underwear.” At the Diesel Café, you’ll find plenty of friendly folks, pool tables, and even a vintage black-and-white photo booth that captures a lot of fun. We love the casual, inviting atmosphere of the place and in particular the collection of throwback memorabilia found throughout the space. The handsome barn pendant lights, very similar to our Universal Cord Hung Pendant, are a definite nod to the 1930s style of RLM-inspired warehouse shades that were popular at the time. The old gas pump standing guard near the pool tables is also apropos as this type of lighting was often spotted at gas stations in the 30s and 40s as well as in warehouses and factories.

Rustic Galvanized Warehouse Shades Lend Country Feel to Business

One of the many ways a light fixture can be protected from rust and corrosion is with a galvanized finish. The earliest known example of the galvanizing of metal was found on 17th century Indian armor. Today, the galvanizing process involves coating steel with zinc which, under most conditions, has a greater resistance to corrosion than bare metal. Galvanizing has the added bonus of being low cost, easy to apply, and has a relatively long, maintenance-free life. All of which makes the galvanized finish on these gooseneck sign lights and gooseneck barn lights all the more desirable!
