These 1950s-era ammo boxes played a starring role in the remodel of an existing space that has become the popular Brat Haüs Restaurant in Scottsdale, Arizona. When this homeowner approached the New York firm of Crisp Architects about fulfilling his dream of a London style pub in his basement, he knew exactly what he wanted right down to the tiniest detail. From the full bar highlighted by brass railings and a stained glass window to a high-backed booth and plenty of tables and chairs for pints and poker, this cozy pub transports the homeowner and his guests to another place. A small fireplace, low ceilings, and dark tones add to the cozy and casual atmosphere as does the barn chandelier casting light onto the pool table.
Today, we stumbled upon a treasure trove of industrial lighting Down Under! Located just south of Sydney, the Grounds of Alexandria is a wildly popular cafe and coffee roaster well known for its seven-bean coffee blend and hearty fare. Located in a former pie factory built in the early 1900s, the eatery is an industrial décor lover’s dream. Black-and-steel framing, wooden cabinetry, retrofitted shipping containers, and subway tile all create a rustic atmosphere that the Aussies just can’t get enough of!
Not so long ago, when someone described an urban area as the “industrial side of town,” that was code for a seedier part of the city, an area dotted with abandoned buildings, shady businesses, and warehouses with broken windows. Classic barn lighting has been in use throughout this country since the 1930s and 1940s when it was most often found on farms, at roadside gas stations, and in warehouses and factories where solid, dependable lighting was necessary for the work at hand.
