For the first few years, only Schlitz beer was served since Schlitz was the only company that would give credit to small, up-and-coming businesses. Ever notice an upside down photo in the dining room or paw prints in the tile floor? These are long-standing Chili’s traditions. These days, Chili’s wants you to “savor the flavor” and it’s obvious they’ve been spicing up something besides the ribs! Many locations have been sprucing up their locations with new decor and gooseneck lighting.

When the creators of the Northern Spy Food Company opened their doors three years ago, they wanted to bring a bit of country charm straight to the urban heart of New York City. A small neighborhood restaurant located in the East Village, the eatery is named after one of New York State’s classic heirloom apples. The restaurant’s design embraces the concept of using reclaimed materials, and you can see the effects from floor to ceiling. Customers stroll on reclaimed hickory boards, the old brick walls are painted white to breathe air into the space, a pillar wrapped in rope has a rustic feel, the retail cubbies are crafted from an old chicken coop, and the dining room tables are made from salvaged bowling alley lanes. East Village residents have never seen anything quite like this, and they can’t seem to get enough!

In this Parisian restaurant, the black-and-white palette scales new heights with the unexpected uses of texture and treatment. For example, instead of simply using solid color chairs, the seats are painted randomly — black chairs with white accents, white chairs with black —  to add a playfulness to what could be a staid and boring space. The white linens add a crispness to the tables while the white artwork along the back wall brings some interesting texture into the room. And the white, cord hung warehouse shades help negate the high ceiling adding light and visual interest.

You call Valet Gourmet if you’re lucky enough to live in western North Carolina. The nine-year-old company that began with 13 partner restaurants and a staff of only 3 people has grown to more than 25 staff that arranges delivery from more than 75 Asheville area restaurants. At the nerve center of Valet Gourmet, orders come flying in and drivers go rushing out all under the watchful glow of some vintage lights that once lit up Friday night football games at a nearby stadium.
