Though the city of Chicago burned to the ground in the late 1800s in one of the largest disasters of the 19th century, residents soon rose up and started rebuilding. One of those new homes, built in 1894, is in the Lakeview neighborhood north of the city and is home to Courtney, a hospitality designer by trade. After fire tore through their 150-year-old building, the owners of Frank M. Booth, Inc. made quite a discovery under the water-laden ashes. As the structure was torn apart, they noticed large, hand-hewn columns that were part of the original building — a carriage-making shop built in the 1860s. Some of the columns still had large metal rings used to tether horses.
