After getting caught up in our catalog launch and another exciting appearance on Extreme Makeover Home Edition, we almost forgot about our own construction update! If you follow along, this past Friday was the final launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis. With only two remaining shuttle missions left, it seems the world is flocking to get a glimpse of history – and when an additional estimated 300,000 people came into Titusville Friday, traffic was a little more than backed up. So, we decided to close up shop for a couple hours to take part in the launch, allow for plenty of travel time, and also to give our employees a chance to see our new building’s progress.

Discovery Channel is launching a new 1-hour series titled Construction Intervention where Charlie “The Bulldog†Frattini and his crew tackle real life property improvement dilemmas. This particular episode features Dominick Anfuse, owner and chef of Al’ Di La Restaurant in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Dominick started renovations in his downtown Italian restaurant nearly two years ago. From what started as a dream quickly turned into a renovation nightmare. Dominick experienced several bad contractors who left him with an unfinished restaurant and financially broke. Without a clear and concise plan, Dominick took on the role of sub-contractor, restaurateur, and chef. Unfortunately now, Dominick’s dream of running a traditional Italian restaurant is taking a toll on his family, his health, and his bank account.

The future 3405 South Washington Avenue may look a little rough around the edges now, but this week at Barn Light Electric we’ve hit our half way point! Twelve weeks down, twelve weeks to (hopefully) go! The exterior saw a pleasant addition on Tuesday with the porch being added over the front entryway. It will be finished up next week, with the addition of galvanized steel on top. The remaining exposed (and still blue) concrete block got power washed to remove any remaining dirt or loose paint. Instead of painting the block again, we will be using a flat stucco material. It will hopefully give it a more aesthetically pleasing look than the teal painted concrete block. Next week’s exterior projects will include door and window installation! Although we don’t see many hurricanes here on the Space Coast, being prepared is a must. We’ve taken all the necessary precautions (and code requirements) by ordering impact resistant perimeter and storefront windows. Although up front costs can be greater, they will save time and money in the long run.

The TV shows today make construction look too easy! In under 60 minutes, a hand full of people can clean out, demo, paint, and decorate entire rooms or garages. In 2010, we have had the pleasure with working on several television renovation shows – Construction Intervention, Garage Mahal, and Extreme Makeover, just to name a few. Working around the clock for 3-4 days, designers can take a cluttered or ugly space and transform it into a work of art. If only it were that easy! In real time, we’re on Week 11 – moving slowly, but progressing.
