Gooseneck Warehouse Shades Add Security with Style

Choosing security lighting for a business can be daunting with endless choices in fixtures, types of bulbs, and energy saving features to consider. Some people think brighter is better and choose the biggest lights they can find to light up everything within three city blocks. Yet using extra bright lights is actually discouraged by security experts. The problem with these fixtures is that the glare they produce actually prevents you, or the passing patrol car, to see clearly when trying to spot potential intruders. Bright lights create deep shadows where prowlers and plunderers can hide. Outdoor lighting fixtures are best placed so the light is cast downwards onto the sidewalk, doorway, or surface below. This also prevents light from spilling to your neighbor’s windows which is most unneighborly indeed!

Vintage Cone Shaped Pendant Adds Flair to British Kitchen

vintage_cased_cone_shade_pendant.jpgIf you were browsing the Porcelain Blog last week, you might recognize the unusual paint scheme in this kitchen. The color of the lower cabinetry continues above the oak countertops lending an unusual visual treat. We featured a shot of a deep bowl porcelain pendant in that particular blog, but today we’re focusing on the vintage pendant overhanging the kitchen table. This space was created with a royal’s touch as none other than Prince Charles himself collaborated with the company Plain English to design this model home for last year’s Ideal Home Show in London. The Prince apparently is an avid supporter of sustainable living, and he worked with Plain English to create a lower cost version of this line of finely crafted, glazed wall cabinetry. Read More »

Porcelain Warehouse Shades for Unusual German Market

Ever have one of those hectic nights when you don’t feel like cooking yet the same old takeout just won’t satisfy that craving for a home-cooked meal? A clever concept was launched in Berlin back in late 2010 that left many people wondering — why didn’t I think of that? The owners describe Kochhaus as a “walk-in cookbook” where customers choose dinner from illustrated recipes hanging throughout the store then select premeasured ingredients off the shelves. Voila! Homecooked meals with no missing spices and no hassle in the kitchen. Not surprisingly, Berliners took to the concept immediately prompting the opening of two more locations in Hamburg and Berlin.

Vintage Warehouse Shades for Rustic East Village Eatery

When the creators of the Northern Spy Food Company opened their doors three years ago, they wanted to bring a bit of country charm straight to the urban heart of New York City. A small neighborhood restaurant located in the East Village, the eatery is named after one of New York State’s classic heirloom apples. The restaurant’s design embraces the concept of using reclaimed materials, and you can see the effects from floor to ceiling. Customers stroll on reclaimed hickory boards, the old brick walls are painted white to breathe air into the space, a pillar wrapped in rope has a rustic feel, the retail cubbies are crafted from an old chicken coop, and the dining room tables are made from salvaged bowling alley lanes. East Village residents have never seen anything quite like this, and they can’t seem to get enough!

Barn Light Warehouse Shade Never Loses its Timeless Charm

When you’re immersed day-to-day in the barn lighting business, you tend to notice vintage and industrial lighting in all sorts of places. At the new business around the corner that installed handsome gooseneck lights over the entryway or in a charming coastal cottage that boasts the perfect nautical lighting on the porch. Old, black-and-white movies are also a great place to spot vintage RLM warehouse designs. So recently when I was browsing an online catalog for gas fireplaces, I was immdiately distracted by the beautiful porcelain barn light hanging in the background of this picture.  What an excellent choice for this setting!

Gooseneck Sconce Tucks into Small Study Space with Ease

barn_wall_sconce_arlington.jpgA wise woman once told me as she was building her house, tell the contractor to take advantage of every single square foot especially behind the walls. If you see a space, put a door on it, and you have instant storage. Even small spaces that would seem useless can become invaluable for storage or, as seen in this photo, a terrific study space. This small nook could have been an interesting closet but instead the builder created a perfectly cozy space complete with some industrial decor, a window for daydreaming, and a handsome wall sconce for lighting. This sweet little light is much like our Barn Light Arlington Sconce, part of our collection of Barn Wall Sconces. Barn wall sconces bring out the best of the classic warehouse shade, a fixture first found back in the 1930s and 40s on farms and in factories. A smaller version than most other sconces, these barn fixtures tuck perfectly into smaller rooms or spaces bringing light where you need it. Read More »
