The Nantahala Outdoor Center in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, like many other commercial businesses, uses track lighting to help put the spotlight on their tables and displays. But to bring some distinctive flavor to their lighting scheme, they also added more interesting fixtures throughout the store. When you enter the two-story facility which opens up to the second floor in the center, there is much to see with a climbing wall, life-size black bears standing watch, and a swinging bridge connecting the spaces. Your eyes are also drawn to a row of  colorful kayaks hanging from the rafters which are accented by vintage lights mounted on pulleys that can be pulled up and down.

Before they opened their new Fork & Wrench Bar and Dining Room, the owners of this eatery spent two years designing and building the interior space with the goal of creating an environment that is a tribute to the working classes of the 1920s, 30s, and 40s. There are hints of a workshop, a linen factory line, a pharmacy, a college science lab, and a savings and loan office scattered throughout the rooms, balconies, and courtyards of the space. Loads of industrial touches are evident including bare bulb pendants, industrial stools at the bar, and plenty of wrought iron to complement the warm, dark wood throughout.

The Porch House project, designed by Lake | Flato Architects is one such example. Instead of starting from scratch, the architects took factory-built rooms, such as living and bedroom spaces, then added custom designed elements built on sight to connect the cost-saving, pre-built pieces. These connecting elements are often porches, breezeways, overhangs, and carports. This photo shows a breezeway crafted from rustic corrugated metal and wood — very fitting for a ranch in central Texas.
