They say “follow your dreams” but what if your dream house is a coastal cottage and the closest ocean is more than 1,400 miles away? That minor detail didn’t stop Sheila Krehbiel and her husband from building their Hamptons-style house in the middle of Kansas, a state more known for wheat, sunflowers, and Toto. The house is still in progress but the couple recently installed The Original Warehouse Shade on the exterior. More warehouse shades and some ceiling fans are currently going up inside and we’ll check those out soon!

The term “health care facility” conjures up all sorts of sterile images of white tile flooring, stainless steel fixtures, and fluorescent lights. The newly opened Parrish Health Village West, located in our hometown of Titusville, Florida, smashes that image completely. The new campus, designed in a 19th century architectural style, offers health care programs for seniors such as disease prevention, health education, senior wellness, and lifestyle education. Three of our community’s most notable historic houses were renovated as part of the campus, and Barn Light Electric was proud to supply some classic vintage lighting and other fixtures to complete the historic look.

In yesterday’s blog we found some tasteful rustic sconces and gooseneck angle shades at the Market Center located in historic Biltmore Village just outside the gates of the Biltmore mansion, the largest home ever built in America. When George Vanderbilt created his vast estate in Asheville, North Carolina he also built a peaceful community just outside the gates to complement his landholdings and to supply a source of rental income. Today, Biltmore Village offers an array of shopping and dining establishments including one of the most elegant McDonald’s restaurants in the world featuring a grand player piano, vaulted ceilings, and fireplaces. America’s largest home, aka the Biltmore Mansion, may get all the publicity, but the quaint Biltmore Village just outside the gates to the Estate is equally charming and was one of America’s first planned communities. George Vanderbilt envisioned the Village as a planned, self-sustaining community whose formal appearance would not only complement his beautiful estate but provide rental income. Almost all of the original buildings survive from the 1890’s, and today, Biltmore Village is a distinctive shopping district with independent retailers and fine restaurants located on tree-lined streets with brick sidewalks and open air dining.
