Nestled into a slope on the southern shore of Lake Simcoe just north of Toronto, a one-room sleeping cabin offers a peaceful respite from the rest of the world. The homeowners desired a retreat from their main cottage, located just up the hill, where they could enjoy the waterfront views. The award-winning design is a glass cabin surrounded on three sides by cedar slats. Inside the 275-square-foot space, the bare essentials include a bed with built-in drawers, storage cabinets, and a wood-burning stove. Above the bed, a modern ceiling fan helps stir the summer breezes and, in the winter, circulate the warm air provided by the wood stove.
In last Thursday’s blog, we visited a cabin settled into a peaceful valley in eastern Washington. Located in a beautiful meadow surrounded by mountains, the thoughtful layout of this home takes advantage of sweeping views up and down the valley. In the previous blog, we admired the post-mounted rustic sconces placed throughout a large courtyard that connects the two structures forming the L-shaped home.

In yesterday’s blog, we visited with Dana of House Tweaking fame where she and her handy husband are tackling the major renovation of a 1950s brick rancher. Downsizing from a McMansion, as Dana calls her former home, the couple are making the most of their smaller space which helps them satisfy financial goals plus cuts the commute time for Dad so he can spend more time with their three kids.
