Modern Industrial Lighting for New Pool House Construction
When adding a garage, shed or other outbuilding, many homeowners mimic the style of the home in the new addition. But when Robert and his family added a pool and accompanying pool house to their property in Bergen County, New Jersey, they wanted to go in a different design direction.
“Our home was built in 1971 and is very traditional in its design,” Robert says. “We wanted the pool house to have very clean lines with a different feel since it is located away from the main house. Overall, a beach-cabana-casual, lived-in feeling with interesting finishes.”
The pool house features a palette of white and soft grays with an open bar and serving area, a couch with a flat-screen TV, and plenty of storage inside. The Galvalume roof and matching half-round gutters lend an industrial feel while a sliding barn door purchased on Etsy adds color and visual interest.
“We absolutely wanted industrial-style lighting and American made if possible,” Robert notes. “We went online and found Barn Light Electric.” Robert selected the Cherokee Uplight Stem Mount Pendant for his new pool house. He customized these handcrafted pendants with 16″ shades, a Galvanized finish to match the roof, and 12″ stems. Clear glass provides plenty of illumination.
“The barn style made sense because it has a familiarity to us and a certain warmth,” Robert explains. “We wanted ample downlighting but not a ‘heaviness’ to the lights. We like the uplighting feature as it illuminates the raised ceiling insert of stained pine.” As he customized his fixtures online, Robert worked with his electrician to calculate the appropriate stem size. The 12″ stems position the fixtures evenly with the bottom of the raised ceiling line. Robert adds that they love being able to see the filament inside the Edison bulbs.
“We like that these lights are suited to the space and give it warmth but with that modern industrial look,” Robert says. “They are perfect for outdoor living — durable, architecturally interesting, and will stand the test of time as styles change.”
