Wooden-Accented Pendants, Gooseneck Lights Accent Lakehouse Reno

When Peggy and her husband decided to renovate their home on Pickwick Lake in southwest Tennessee, they envisioned a modern farmhouse that would be fun, relaxing, and low maintenance.

“This was an extensive renovation; pretty much a complete gut,” Peggy says. “We went with blues, grays, and white with mostly shiplap and tile and very little sheetrock throughout the house.” Peggy also wanted plenty of warm light with fixtures that could be dimmed to control the brightness as needed.

One popular spot is the kitchen where Peggy and her husband gather with their kids, spouses, and grandkids. The indigo blue island is accented by two Marathon Wooden Top Pendants which are handcrafted from Walnut and feature a Graphite porcelain enamel finish. The 16″ shades are suspended from gray cloth cords which add a hint of texture.

“The shades provide plenty of light over the 10-foot island without it feeling too crowded,” Peggy explains. “And the wooden top ties in perfectly with the other natural wood accents throughout the house such as the mantels, vent hood trim, and floating shelves.” A popular fixture in Barn Light’s Timber & Ore Collection, the Marathon features a metal shade topped by a handcrafted wooden top that is available in three different wood species.

“The pendants keep the modern farmhouse feel and coordinate well with all of the other finishes in my kitchen and family room,” Peggy notes. “The two pendants provide plenty of light for all uses — food prep, dining, art projects, or just hanging out.”

When considering farmhouse-style lighting for the exterior of their home, Peggy notes that having dark-sky-friendly fixtures was very important.

“Barn lighting is more night-sky friendly which is important at the lake,” she explains. “I come here to relax and enjoy the sky at night. The wrong lighting can ruin your view of the night sky.” Peggy chose the classic Original™ Warehouse Gooseneck Light for her exterior lighting needs.

She customized 13 of these American-made outdoor lights with 12″ shades, a Chocolate powder coat finish, and G26 gooseneck arms.

“The outside area is a little busy with lots of doors in the common area between the garage and main house,” Peggy notes. “There are also sliding doors from the main living area and bedrooms opening onto a wraparound porch/deck area.”

“The 12″ size is perfect,” she continues. “The Chocolate finish matches the finish on my windows and doors and also coordinates well with my bronze deck posts and exterior swing doors.”

A matching Original™ Flush Mount Pendant is installed on the porch by the entry to an apartment space over the garage. This fixture also features a 12″ shade and Chocolate finish.

“The head clearance is limited here,” she notes, “but I wanted to match the other exterior fixtures. The flush-mounted pendant was a great solution.”

For the garage, Peggy opted for the same gooseneck light but with a larger 16″ shade and a G15 gooseneck arm. This gooseneck arm provides a slightly longer projection from the façade than the G26 arms used on the rest of the outdoor lights. Peggy found Barn Light Electric a few years ago when she purchased lighting for her permanent residence.

“I have been very pleased,” she says. “I enjoy the light they provide without feeling that they compromise the style of my home or intrude on the neighbors’ enjoyment of the night sky.”
