American-Made Lighting Lends Timeless Feel to Modern Home
Although Maryland is one of the smallest states in the Union, there is plenty of geographical diversity packed within its borders. From the shores of the Atlantic in Ocean City, up the Chesapeake Bay to Annapolis and Baltimore, to the grandeur of Appalachia in the western regions, anyone can find their happy place in Maryland.
It was in the western reaches that Bill and his family decided to build their dream home. Located in Garrett County, their new home lies at the top of a mountain at the end of a three-mile long gravel road.
“We have very high, sloped ceilings to accommodate the snow load and large windows to take in the impressive views,” Bill says. “The house is modern with a neutral gray palette.” In his search for lighting the open floor plan, Bill sought out well-designed fixtures that could help create a composed living space. As a return customer to Barn Light Electric, Bill knew he could count on the quality of the fixtures.
“This is the second house where we have used Barn Light fixtures,” he notes. “We were really happy to discover that you had so many new options to offer since we last purchased.” Bill chose both barn-style pendants and schoolhouse lights for his new home.
Visitors to the home are greeted by a Primary Schoolhouse Pendant Light in the foyer. Bill customized this vintage-inspired fixture with large opaque glass, a black fitter and canopy, and a single black painted band of color around the globe.
“This is a fun look, timeless, and well designed,” Bill explains. “We didn’t want lighting that was too ‘special’ or decorative. We love the vintage feel of our choices.” Carrying the look over to the kitchen, Bill chose the same fixture but with the small size opaque glass. He chose the same black canopy and fitter but opted for the triple painted band of color on these globes.
“Small differences let you know the spaces relate but aren’t exactly the same,” Bill notes. “The larger globe and band in the foyer say ‘welcome’ then as you walk into the kitchen, you see that the design relates. Continuity was an important design choice for us.”
To highlight the nearby bar sink, Bill dove into our Barn Lighting collection and found the Sinclair Industrial Pendant Light to be the perfect complement to the schoolhouse lights. He customized these three pendant lights with 16″ shades and an Industrial Grey finish. He also chose nickel sockets with knob switches and red chevron cords to add even more personality.
“The fixture is so much fun and we loved all of the customizing options,” Bill relates. “We wanted to make a statement that this space within the kitchen is different. I know the kitchen will be a gathering area so the lighting had to be right. We like the large shade and the grey is a nod to the grout choices in the kitchen.”
For the larger kitchen sink, a Conoco Gooseneck Light adds another splash of barn style to the space. This handspun gooseneck light features a shallow 15″ shade, Black finish, and Brushed Aluminum G15 gooseneck arm.
“This is a sleek and fun light and is a special look for a prominent place,” Bill notes. “The aluminum arm relates well with the stainless appliances and has a cool, almost industrial, feel. It makes the scale of the kitchen more accessible and has old-time, vintage appeal but with an updated vibe.” Bill adds that instead of buying cheap, foreign knock-offs, he considers buying American-made lighting a moral obligation.
“When the Barn Light boxes arrived, it was obvious there was a quality control process in place, and I appreciate that,” he says. “The lights make the spaces pop and are beautiful. They will look great for years to come and stand the test of time.”
