Porcelain Pendant Light Anchors Breakfast Nook with Vintage Style

When John and Courtney purchased a home in 2014 as a foreclosure, they faced a daunting renovation. Built in 1882 and dubbed Content for the peaceful happiness it brought to the owner, the home was historically significant but had been neglected and abandoned in recent years.

Although busy with full-time jobs and with no prior renovation experience, the couple completely overhauled the home with a thoughtful eye towards preserving vintage details. The transformation didn’t go unnoticed as they started getting requests from other homeowners for renovation and design help.

Two years ago, Courtney and John left their jobs and created Content+Company where they work one-on-one with homeowners helping them realize their home’s potential. One of their most recent jobs was in Red Bank, New Jersey, where the homeowner’s main goal was bringing light and function to her home.

“We decided on a modern farmhouse design for the kitchen and centered the space around a 32″ apron-front farm sink,” Courtney says. “We also used exposed brick, wood grain floor tile, brass hardware, and fresh white quartz counter tops to communicate the overall theme.”

Although the kitchen is one room, they designed two distinct areas within it. While the kitchen work space is clean and functional, the couple opted to make the breakfast nook feel cozy and whimsical.

“We were eager to find a statement fixture that would draw attention to the nook,” Courtney explains. “We were attracted to the Original™ Warehouse Pendant Light and its beautiful Jadite finish. Plus the selection of sizes allowed us to pair the fixture perfectly with the table. We wanted an over-sized fixture that would stand alone and look stunning with the natural light backdrop during the day and in the evening.”

Courtney chose an 18″ shade for this handcrafted, American-made porcelain enamel pendant. She further customized it with a red-and-white cloth cord.

“Using the Jadite was a very specific decision. The client wanted to keep the overall color palette neutral which allowed us to incorporate an unexpected pop of color,” she notes. “The Jadite, paired with the colorful cord, is a subtle nod to the homeowner’s love of vintage.” The result is a welcoming venue filled with natural light plus a statement fixture that anchors the space.

“The pendant looks stunning with the natural light backdrop,” Courtney says. “The nook is perfect for casual morning coffee and for entertaining friends.”
