Industrial Lights Illuminate Attic Treasures in Renovation
When you envision your attic, do you see cobwebs and lofty piles of insulation? Bare light bulbs hanging from the ceiling? Boxes filled with forgotten treasures?
An attic in Indianapolis dispels all of those images thanks to the talented hand of Kelley Ross who describes herself as more of an artist than a designer. She was hired to turn the unused attic space into something warm, cozy, and inviting for the homeowners.
“This was an unfinished attic and all new construction by Randy Walker Construction,” Kelley says. “The clients wanted an old warehouse/factory/industrial feel. Something that looked aged and worn.”
The clients wanted a bar, a bathroom, and a place to store their sizable record collection. With no natural light coming into the odd-shaped room, which includes this space-saving Murphy table behind the faux window, Kelley had her work cut out to light the space effectively.
“They gave me a lot of freedom in choosing finishes and materials,” Kelley notes. In the bathroom, she placed an Atomic Topless Double Industrial Guard Sconce over the sink along with the complementary Streamline Industrial Guard Sconce. She customized both of these rustic wall sconces with a Black finish and clear glass.
The bar area features a rolling cart with all the essentials parked next to a cabinet with industrial pipe shelving that holds collectibles and memorabilia. A Fargo Pendant Light casts a spot of light onto the cart while an Elliptical Sign Light focuses on the shelving.
The Fargo ceiling pendant has a petite five-inch shade perfect for small spaces, and this American-made fixture was customized with a Dark Green finish, Textured Black cup, and a wire cage for a vintage feel. The sign light has a tapered cone reminiscent of the vintage clamshell shades and was topped off with a Galvanized finish and G11 gooseneck arm.
“I wanted it to look like the space spanned different time periods and things had been added and changed so there would be a variety of fixture styles and colors,” Kelley explains. The door next to the bar area reads Roof Access but actually leads to a storage room. The doorway is brightened by The Original™ Warehouse Gooseneck Light with a 12″ shade, Black finish and a G22 gooseneck arm in Brushed Aluminum.
The highlight of this attic renovation lies behind the beaded curtain with an image of an old wooden door — a space to highlight the homeowners’ collection of hundreds of vintage record albums.
“The record room is intended to look like a store from the ’60s or ’70s,” Kelley says, so she added a painted “tin” ceiling and three Barn Light Indy Industrial Pendants. These minimalist, bare bulb ceiling lights are customized with a Black finish, turn key switch, and black cotton twist cord.
“The fixtures are high quality and well represented on your website,” Kelley adds. “I liked being able to customize the finishes and colors. Everything came in exactly as ordered.”
