Featured Customer | Barn Lights Beautify New Coastal Home Inside and Out
When Hurricane Sandy was bearing down on the East Coast just before Halloween, millions of anxious Americans watched and waited. In Madison, Connecticut, a coastal town along Long Island Sound, Jennifer and Mark had just finished installing barn lights and were putting the finishing touches on their brand new home when the hurricane hit. “We moved in the first week of October. Our house made out fine, thankfully, but we were without power for a week,” Jennifer says.
“We were worried about flooding since we live on a marsh that looks out to the Sound, but the storm hit at low tide which saved us.”Their new home is a shingle style and the design is casual coastal — perfect for the couple, their three kids, and two Jack Russells.
Jennifer and Mark put a lot of thought into the lighting for their home and, while it’s new construction, they wanted the character of an older home. They chose a mix of barn lights, warehouse shades, rustic pendants, goosenecks, and rustic sconces, all American made, for both inside and out.
“The lights work perfectly with the style and look I was trying to achieve. I didn’t want the house to be too formal or serious,” Jennifer explains. “Barn lights are reminiscent of a time when homes were built with lots of character. I’ve always loved them and knew I wanted to incorporate them into a new home if we ever decided to build.”
On the back of the house along a pathway, Jennifer chose the 14″ Outback Gooseneck Light in a Galvanized finish with a classic gooseneck arm. She also chose a contrasting red guard and frosted glass.
“I love this light!” Jennifer says. “It is so cool and stands apart from all the rest. It’s a great little conversation piece.” Jennifer also chose a classic RLM warehouse shade — the Original Warehouse Gooseneck Light in Bronze — to spotlight other exterior areas. For the garage, the couple selected the Atomic Cast Guard CGU Sconce in Bronze. A galvanized version highlights the back door of the house. Jennifer found Barn Light Electric after an online search.
“Your website caught my eye,” she says. “You could see the quality online and the customer photos are great for ideas.” Be sure to check back tomorrow as we go inside Jennifer’s new home to see what lighting choices she made there. You’re not going to believe her kitchen!

Beautiful home! If possible, can you tell me what was used for the exterior siding? Cedar? Hardie Board? Many thanks!
Hi Anne! I have contacted Jennifer to ask your question about the siding. When I hear from her, I’ll let you know. Thanks for stopping by the blog!
Anne,
Got this response from Jennifer — The siding is made by Maibec- it is Eastern White Cedar with one coat of their stain color in Maibec grey. Their website is http://www.maibec.com.
